Heinz Wattie's Limited ("Heinz Wattie's") produces and markets a wide range of foods suitable for different ages including: baby foods, baked beans, soups, cooking sauces, fruits, vegetables and meals.

Heinz Wattie's has various programmes in place to improve the nutritional profile of its products, including a sodium reduction programme which has been in place since 2005 and in more recent years major product research has been undertaken to reduce the sugar levels in our products.

Heinz Wattie's company specific guidelines and partnerships

  • Heinz Wattie's has in place various company guidelines for levels of sodium, sugar, saturated fat, protein, fibre and the percentage of fruit and vegetable in our products, where relevant to a product category. Internal targets for sodium and sugar are based on the Heart Foundation industry guidelines as applicable.
  • Our Wattie's Baby Food Partnership with Plunket has been in place for over 25 years. All Wattie's baby food recipes are approved by Plunket and our Independent Nutrition Advisory Group (INAG).
  • Heinz Wattie’s follows the Kraft Heinz worldwide charter of practice for marketing breast-milk substitutes which is applied across all business units globally. The aim is to support breastfeeding and to outline principles and requirements to provide safe and adequate nutrition for infants and young children, when breastfeeding cannot be provided. In addition to this H.J. Heinz Company (New Zealand) Limited, as a member of the Infant Nutrition Council (INC), has adopted The Infant Nutrition Council Code of Practice for the Marketing of Infant Formula in New Zealand .
  • Our Food in a Minute programme includes 'Healthy Pick' options. These recipes meet our guidelines for saturated fat, sodium, sugar, vegetable and fruit portions.
  • Our frozen & canned vegetable and canned fruit range include an on-pack device 'Wattie's Fruit & Veg Each Day' indicating the number of fruit or vegetable serves in the product.
  • Heinz Wattie's is a member of NZFAVA, a Fruit & Vegetable coalition (foundation member) established to promote the benefits of Eating 5 F&V per day.
  • We partner with the New Zealand Nutrition Foundation, supporting their nutrition related programmes including JUST COOK.

Reduction of sugar and salt

  • Major product research has been undertaken to reduce sugar in products in recent years, which has resulted in the launch of products such as Wattie's Tomato Sauce with 50% less sugar (35% less salt), Heinz Ketchup 50% less added sugar and salt, Wattie's Baked Beanz 50% less added sugar (30% less salt) and Wattie's Spaghetti 50% less added sugar (30% less salt).
  • We continue to introduce and innovate products in our key categories to meet our sugar reduction guidelines. The following examples illustrate our progress to date:
    • More than 90 percent of our Wattie's & The Good Taste Company soups
    • More than 90 percent of our ETA & Heinz Seriously Good dressings & mayonnaise
    • More than 90 percent of our Wattie's & Weight Watchers frozen meals
  • We continue to introduce and innovate products in our key categories to meet our sodium reduction guidelines. The following examples illustrate our progress to date:
    • All of our Wattie's pasta sauces
    • 80 percent of our ETA & Heinz Seriously Good dressings & mayonnaise
    • 80 percent of our Wattie's & The Good Taste Company soup products
    • More than 75 percent of our Wattie's & Weight Watchers frozen meals
  • We continue to offer consumers choices with reduced sugar and salt varieties of our most popular products including Wattie's Baked Beans, Wattie's Spaghetti and Wattie's Tomato Sauce.

We support and implement the Australia and New Zealand government-led Health Star Rating programme. We display Health Star Rating on a number of products including our soups, baked beans, legumes, spaghetti, canned fruit and vegetable, frozen meals, frozen vegetables and cooking sauces.
